We’ve had a lovely week celebrating Guinea Pig Awareness Week (GPAW)! Over the week, we welcomed some truly adorable guinea pigs who are all wonderfully cared for by their caring owners. It was a pleasure to see so many happy, healthy piggies and to chat with owners who are clearly passionate about their pets’ wellbeing.

Each guinea pig enjoyed a free health check with nurse Lucy, who carried out a nose-to-tail examination. This included initial observations, checking teeth, listening to their chest, assessing their skin and coat, and recording their weight in a personalised health booklet. We also had plenty of time to talk through the essentials of diet, housing, and companionship. These are key factors of guinea pig care that GPAW helps to promote.

Every guinea pig went home with a Nova vets goody bag, packed with treats and information. These included some hay and nugget samples, heart treats, a guide to guinea pig care booklet, guinea pig keyring, “Proud Piggy Parent” stickers and a cute guinea pig magnet! Some lucky piggies had a cheeky little pedicure to round off their visit.

GPAW is all about raising awareness of guinea pig health and welfare, encouraging owners to learn more about their pets’ needs from nutrition and housing to the importance of having a guinea pig companion.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and to those who joined in the conversation online. Your enthusiasm and care make all the difference in helping spread the word about guinea pig care.

From all of us at Nova vets, thank you for helping make Guinea Pig Awareness Week such a success and for being such wonderful advocates and proud piggy parents.
