How to order your pet’s medication?

If your pet is unwell or you suspect they may need medication, the first step is a consultation with one of our vets.

They’ll assess your pet and determine a treatment plan. If medication is needed, we’ll then issue a prescription and, if we have the medicine in stock, can provide you with the relevant medications to take home. Alternatively, if you’d prefer to source the medication elsewhere, we can provide a written prescription.

If your pet is on long-term medication, you can request repeat prescriptions via our online form. We will usually get you booked in for periodic reassessments, just to make sure your pet is still responding well to the medication and whether any changes need to be made.

How much does a pet prescription cost at Nova Vets?

To keep our process as straightforward and transparent as possible, we charge a set fee to issue a written prescription.

The cost of the medications themselves will vary depending on the type and dosage required. We will always provide a full estimate for any medications before we dispense them.

Answers to our pet prescription FAQs

Got questions about pet prescriptions? You’re not alone.

From when a prescription is needed to how to request one, we’ve answered some of the most common queries to help you understand the entire pet medication prescription process.

Do I need a consultation for a pet prescription?

Yes, before we can issue a prescription, one of our vets must assess your pet before issuing a prescription to ensure the medication is appropriate and safe.

If your pet is on longer-term medication, a consultation may not be needed every time, but we are required to schedule in regular reviews for your pet to make sure their treatment is still appropriate, safe, and that they’re still responding well.

Can I request a written pet prescription to use online?

Absolutely. While we can dispense most medications direct from the practice, written prescriptions offer more flexibility if you’d prefer to source your pet’s medication from an online pharmacy, just let us know.

Before ordering your pet prescriptions online, we always recommend ensuring that the pharmacy you are planning to use is accredited and registered with a regulatory body like the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and the VMD (Veterinary Medicines Directorate).

How long does it take to process a prescription request?

We aim to process prescription requests within 48 hours (excluding weekends and Bank Holidays). If your pet hasn’t had a recent check-up, we may need to book a consultation before issuing the prescription. For urgent medication needs, please contact us directly so we can prioritise your request.

How do I order my pet’s repeat prescriptions?

Yes, absolutely. You can request repeat prescriptions by getting in touch with us via phone or email. As long as your pet has been assessed recently and the medication is still appropriate, we’ll approve the request and let you know when it’s ready for collection or delivery.

Please note that for long-term medications, periodic vet check-ins are required by law to continue repeat prescriptions.

Is medication cheaper through you or online pharmacies?

Prices for medications can vary according to brand, medication type, and dosage, so while we aim to keep our prices as reasonable as we can, in some cases, online pharmacies may offer lower prices, especially for long-term medications. That’s why we’re happy to provide a written prescription if you prefer to buy your pet’s medication elsewhere. However, ordering directly through Nova offers added convenience, quicker access, and professional support if you have any concerns about the medication.
