Soft-tissue surgery

Soft-tissue procedures are some of the most common surgeries we perform. These include:

  • Lump removals
  • Spaying and neutering
  • Bladder surgery
  • Gastrointestinal procedures
  • Wound repair
  • Ear and eye surgery

Our veterinary team is highly experienced in soft-tissue surgery for dogs, cats, and other small animals, and we work hard to ensure a smooth, stress-free experience for both pets and their owners.

Orthopaedic surgery

Orthopaedic procedures treat issues affecting your pet’s bones, joints, and ligaments — such as cruciate ligament repair, fracture repairs, and patella luxation surgery.

At Nova Vets, we work with peripatetic (visiting) orthopaedic surgeons – trusted, highly qualified surgeons who bring their expertise directly to our clinic. This means your pet can get advanced care in a familiar environment, without the stress of travelling further afield.

How to prepare your pet for surgery

We know surgery can be daunting, but we’ll make the process as smooth as possible. You’ll receive full instructions in advance, but here’s a quick overview:

  • Fasting: Since we use a general anaesthetic, some pets may need to fast. We’ll let you know if fasting is required and when to start.
  • Medications: Let us know about any current treatments or supplements your pet is taking.
  • Pre-op checks: We carry out full health checks and blood tests (if needed) before surgery.
  • Comfort: Bring your pet’s favourite blanket or toy for reassurance.

We’ll go through everything with you before the day of the procedure, so you feel confident and prepared.

How much does pet surgery cost at Nova Vets?

We’re committed to fair, transparent pricing, with no hidden fees. The cost of surgery depends on the type of procedure, your pet’s size, and whether specialist support is needed. At Nova, we will always provide a clear, upfront estimate before any procedure and are always happy to explain what’s involved.

Answers to our pet surgery FAQs

Surgery can feel overwhelming, both for pets and their pet parents. That’s why we’ve put together answers to some of the most common vet surgery questions we hear from pet owners. Whether your pet is booked in for a routine procedure or something more complex, we’re here to guide you through every step with clarity, compassion, and care.

How do I know if my pet needs surgery?

Sometimes, surgery is essential to treat an illness or injury. Other times, it may be elective – such as getting your pet neutered. Our vets will carry out a full assessment, talk you through your options, and only recommend surgery when it’s truly in your pet’s best interest.

Will my pet be in pain after surgery?

We do everything possible to keep your pet comfortable. We use modern anaesthesia and tailored pain relief plans before, during, and after surgery. Your pet will also go home with the right medication and aftercare instructions to support a smooth recovery.

How long is the recovery period for a pet that’s just had surgery?

Recovery times can differ based on the complexity of the procedure your pet has had, their breed, size, and their lifestyle.

As a general rule, most pets recover from routine soft-tissue surgeries within 7–14 days. Orthopaedic procedures can take longer – often 6–12 weeks, and some pets may need additional physiotherapy to help on their road to recovery.  We’ll give you a detailed recovery plan and follow-up appointments to make sure your pet is healing well.

Why do you use surgeons for orthopaedic cases?

Orthopaedic surgeries are often complex and require advanced skills and equipment. That’s why we partner with expert orthopaedic surgeons – so your pet benefits from the highest level of care while staying in a clinic they know and trust.

What happens if complications arise after surgery?

Although rare, complications can happen – and we’re here to help. We provide full post-op support and clear advice on what to look out for. If you’re ever concerned, you can contact us for advice or an urgent check-up. Your pet’s safety and well-being always come first.
